A Race Like No Other
Nestled in the heart of West Virginia, amidst the sprawling beauty of the Appalachians, the Town of Davis beckons mountain bikers who are brave and bold. This year, gear up for the legendary Revenge of the Rattlesnake race taking place on the third Sunday in September. With its roots stretching back to 1983, the Revenge of the Rattlesnake stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of mountain bike racing on the East Coast.
Davis, the highest incorporated town in the state, stands at an elevation of 3,200 feet, offers more than just beautiful vistas. Its elevation provides a cooler, drier climate that serves as the perfect backdrop for this epic race. However, don’t be fooled by the promise of good weather, Davis holds true to unpredictable elements throughout the entire year. Riders might find themselves enjoying a blue-skied day or battling through the muck and mud – the Revenge of the Rattlesnake stays true to its name.
The 2024 Revenge of the Rattlesnake, a fundraiser for the Blackwater Bicycle Association, promises an enthralling route of around 25 miles. This year’s course is set to challenge participants with its myriad twists, turns, climbs, and descents through Blackwater Falls State Park, the Monongahela National Forest and Canaan Mountain Backcountry, the National Youth Science Foundation, and the West Virginia Land Trust Yellow Creek Natural Area. Boasting about 2,000 feet in climbing and descending, it will test every fiber of your being.
After crossing the finish line, competitors and spectators alike gather to celebrate the day’s achievements. In true mountain biking spirit, age group winners are honored, and all are treated to free pizza from Sirianni’s Pizza Cafe and beer from Stumptown Ales.
While you are here, immerse yourself in the culture and charm of the local communities of Davis and Thomas. We invite you to support the local businesses, explore the area, and stay awhile!
