History of the Revenge of the Rattlesnake Race

The Fabled History of the Rattlesnake Race

Nestled in the rugged heart of West Virginia, the Revenge of the Rattlesnake race, known colloquially as ROTR, holds a storied legacy that extends back to the early days of mountain biking. Since its inception in 1983, the race has evolved from a test of endurance into a legend, woven into the fabric of American mountain biking folklore.

Origins of a Classic

The race’s humble beginnings trace back to the fall of 1983, when Laird Knight set in motion the Canaan Mountain 40K—though in reality, the path charted was closer to 60K. A grueling challenge from the outset, the race saw twelve daring souls line up at the start, but as the harsh terrain and unforgiving conditions took their toll, the day ended with no finishers. This event laid the groundwork for what would become a salient chapter in mountain biking history.

Returning in 1984 as part of the Canaan Mountain Series, the race quickly cemented West Virginia’s status as a premier destination for mountain biking enthusiasts. Drawing competitors from as far away as Maine to Florida, the race attracted a mix of dedicated locals and intrepid riders from across the nation.

The Tale of the Snake

By the late nineties, as the race distance expanded, pushing riders into the realm of ultra-endurance, a name change seemed fitting. What was once known as the Canaan 40K transformed into the Revenge of the Rattlesnake, a moniker that sprung from an unconventional and memorable incident.

In the 1998 edition of the race, competitor Eric Cvechko (current owner of Blackwater Bikes) experienced an encounter that would forever alter the course of the event’s history. While navigating the treacherous trails, Cvechko was struck on the foot by a rattlesnake. In a dramatic turn of events, after a short struggle, the snake—clamped firmly onto his shoe—was inadvertently run over and killed. Cvechko, decided to withdraw from the race, carried the dead snake back to the start line in his fanny pack. From that point forward, the name “Revenge of the Rattlesnake” has symbolized the race.

A Route Like No Other

The race itself is emblematic of the creature from which it derived its name. Twisting and turning through the mountainous terrain, it challenges riders with rocks, roots, and mud, embodying the inherent dangers and unpredictability of the wild and the weather.

Part competition, part adventure, the Revenge of the Rattlesnake continues to beckon the brave. Its story—a blend of human determination and the unpredictability of nature—captures the essence of mountain biking. Each year, as riders line up to take on the challenge, they’re not just racing against one another but also joining in the legacy of a race that has, against all odds, endured and thrived.
